I suggest that you look also at VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc> - 
in particular the file "modules/demux/livedotcom.cpp", which 
implements the interface to the "LIVE555 Streaming Media" code.  You 
may find this easier to understand than the MPlayer code.
