Grumble...  I don't particularly like this, but I didn't particularly like
the "specialClientAccessCheck()" hack either.  But a pair of related hacks
isn't much worse than one, so I'll go ahead and add your patch to the next
release of the software.  (At some point the whole API for custom server
authentication probably needs to be rethought...)
