It’s really quite simple: You are asking for a change to our RTSP client implementation (the ability to specify a client certificate) that, to my knowledge, few, if any, other RTSP client implementations support. Therefore, if you have a server setup that relies upon this, then only our (updated) RTSP client implementation would be able to access your server. Nobody else’s RTSP client software (or hardware) could be used to play your stream.
You might be satisfied with this lack of interoperability, but I'm not. I do not like to develop non-interoperable software. That’s why I’m not planning (at least not right now) to implement this, because you don’t need it: You can find a way to give your server access to a proper (non-self-signed) certificate (however inconvenient you might consider this to be), and you can use the normal password mechanism to authenticate the client(s).
