You may be misunderstandng the purpose of the "*".  See the last paragraph 
of RFC 2326, section C.1.1.

The regular "rtsp://" URL for the (entire) stream will work in the "PLAY" 
request.  (You can see this by running "openRTSP -V" on the "rtsp://" URL
